Itinerary

Day 1 : Mandalay (D)

  • Board Belmond Orcaella and cruise on the Ayeyarwady River towards northern Myanmar.
  • A stop at Mingun includes a visit to the world's largest brick-built pagoda and the biggest uncracked bell.
  • This evening you’ll get to know fellow travellers at the welcome cocktail and dinner party.

Day 2 : Mandalay – New Nyein (B, L, D)

  • Disembark at Nwe Nyein for a guided walking tour and a chance to meet artisans sculpting traditional clay pots.
  • Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar. Lecture “Myanmar ways of life” by your guide at the Lounge Bar.
  • Dinner is served in the Restaurant.
  • Release of Shan Balloons at the Observation Deck (weather permitting).                                          

Day 3 : Kyan Hnyat (B, L, D)

  • Spend the morning strolling around the delightful village of Kyan Hnyat. Children greet you on their way to school and the market begins bustle with activity.
  • As Belmond Orcaella continues its voyage, you can admire the rural villages dotted along the shore.

Day 4 : Katha (B, L, D)

  • Visit Katha by trishaw and take in the market made famous by George Orwell in Burmese Days.
  • Return on board and set sail. Lunch buffet is served in the Restaurant.
  • Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar where you can also enjoy a lecture.
  • This evening dinner is served in the Restaurant, followed by entertainment from Shan Dancers on the Observation Deck.

Day 5 : Bhamo (B, L, D)

  • Arrival at Shwe Paw Kyun. Transfer by boat to the pretty Shwe Paw Island and walk among the stilt houses of the Kachin fishermen. Visit the island monastery, and perhaps call into the village school.
  • Return on board and set sail for Bhamo. We will be entering the dramatic, narrow 2nd defile around 10:00 and passing through should take about two hours.
  • Enjoy the scenery from the Observation Deck.
  • Buffet lunch is served in the Restaurant.
  • Transfer to shore by fast boat for a walking tour of the lively town of Bhamo, the major northern trading post between China and Myanmar.

Day 6: Bhamo (B, L, D)

  • Arrive at Weima village and enjoy a visit to an elephant camp.
  • Continue with a visit to the local school to donate school stationary. Return on board.
  • Spend the afternoon on board and enjoy afternoon tea in the Lounge.

Day 7 : Kachin (B,  L, D)

  • In the early morning, board a train to the forest station of Naba and journey into the thick Kachin jungle and teak forest.
  • Myanmar traditional dress “longyi” and thanakha (local make up) demonstration on the Observation Deck.
  • Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar.
  • Join fellow travellers for a longyi cocktail party.

Day 8 : Thabeikkyin (B, L, D)

  • Alight at Ma Lae Village for a walking tour of the village and a visit to the monastery. Witness a traditional Noviciation Ceremony, regarded as a very important moment for young Burmese boys.
  • After dinner enthusiastic young actors from Mandalay’s School of Performing Arts will enact scenes from the Yamayana play on the Observation Deck. This is a Hindu Creation Epic that is widely performed across all of South-East Asia and features characters from Bali, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Day 9 : Mandalay (B,  L, D)

  • Mandalay comes into view in the early morning.
  • Disembark  for a tour of Myanmar’s second city, including lunch at a local restaurant.
  • A special dinner will be served on the sandbank this evening. 

Day 10 : Bagan (B, L, D)

  • Spend the day gazing at the passing scenery as the ship continues towards Bagan.
  • This evening take in the unforgettable sunset over the Bagan plain and enjoy a puppet show by traditional Bagan artists. 

Day 11 : Bagan (B, L, D)

  • Visit the ancient sites in and around Bagan with an expert guide.
  • In the afternoon you may choose to join a tour of Mount Popa—the legendary home of animist spirits known as Nats—with its impressive summit monastery. Or take a horse-drawn cart or a bicycle to explore on your own.
  • Celebrate your final evening on board at this evening’s cocktail party, and say goodbye to your new friends during the Farewell Dinner.

Day 12 : Bagan Disembarkation (B)

  • Board the ship at Shwe Kyet Yet village near Mandalay. Enjoy an afternoon discovering the city's key sites and traditional arts, including a visit to a family of bronze casters.
  • Raise a glass to the sunset at U Bein Bridge with a sumptuous champagne cocktail.
  • Dine on Asian and Western cuisine in the elegant Restaurant, enjoying our excellent house wines or selecting an international label from our extensive list.. 

Day 2 : Mandalay (B, L. D)

  • Stretch out and relax at an early-morning yoga session, followed by a refreshing treat from our Healthy Juice Bar.
  • Join a Buddhist almsgiving ceremony and experience village life near our jetty before the ship sets sail.
  • Alight in Ava to explore the ancient capital. Take a traditional horse and cart tour or discover the sights by bike.
  • As the ship sails to Bagan, enjoy a range of onboard activities. Attend a talk on Myanmar culture, sample local infusions in our Burmese Tea Shop, learn how to dress in a traditional longyi or have your fortune told by an astrologer.

  • Rise early to attend a soothing meditation session before the ship arrives in Bagan.
  • A range of tour options is available today. Choose from “Introduction to Bagan” for temples and history, “A Day in the Life” for local culture, food and markets, or “Bagan by Bicycle” for those seeking with a taste for action and adventure.
  • Before rejoining the ship for lunch, stroll through the small village that is home to Belmond’s private jetty near Old Bagan. You may wish to visit Belmond’s free clinic, where our onboard doctor will be treating local patients.
  • In the afternoon visit Ananda, one of Bagan’s most magnificent temples. Continue your tour as you explore an off-the-beaten-track temple by torchlight. End your visit by admiring the sunset over the plains.
  • Dine under the stars at the Road to Mandalay Grill on the Observation Deck, before enjoying a classic marionette performance.

Day 4 : Bagan (B)

  • For an additional supplement, early rising guests can take a sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the pagodas.

  • Guests arriving into Bagan on our group flight can enjoy a market visit and temple tour en-route to Belmond Road to Mandalay, which is berthed at the private jetty near Old Bagan.
  • After lunch on board, set off on a guided tour. Visit Ananda, one of Bagan’s most magnificent temples. Explore a rarely visited temple by torchlight and learn about the traditional art of lacquerware.
  • The day ends watching the sun set over the mesmerising, temple-strewn plains and includes an exclusive candle-lighting ceremony just for our guests.
  • Tonight, dine under the stars at the Road to Mandalay Grill on the Observation Deck.

Day 2 : Bagan (B, L, D)

  • Before setting sail embark on the morning adventure of your choice. Select from a bicycle or horse-and-cart ride around the temples of Old Bagan, a sunrise temple tour or a visit to a local community project.
  • As the ship sails towards Mandalay, enjoy onboard activities ranging from a cultural lecture to a treatment at the spa.
  • In the evening, dine on a selection of Asian and Western dishes in the elegant Restaurant. Sample the house wines or choose from our extensive international wine list.

Day 3 : Bagan - Mingun (B, L, D)

  • During the morning’s sailing there are a range of activities available, from sunrise yoga and meditation to cookery demonstrations and a talk from the onboard doctor.
  • Arrive in Mingun and choose from two fascinating tours. Discover the historical sites nearby or join a walk through a rural village, engaging with the locals.

Day 4 : Mandalay (B, L, D)

  • We arrive in Mandalay after a short cruise. Early risers can participate in a Buddhist almsgiving ceremony on shore.
  • Select the tour of your choice: “Highlights of Mandalay” visits important historic sites around the city, including Kuthodaw Pagoda and Shwenandaw Golden Monastery. “
  • Rejoin the ship at Shwe Kyet Yet village. After lunch, visit the Sagaing Hills, considered to be the living centre of the Buddhist faith in Myanmar.

  • After a domestic flight from Yangon to Bagan, transfer to the Road To Mandalay. In the afternoon, take a guided tour of Bagan and watch the sunset over a field of thousands of pagodas.

Day 2 : Mandalay – Bagan (B, L, D)

  • After breakfast join the guide to explore some of Bagan's bustling local markets. Alternatively, you can hire a bicycle or horse-drawn cart and explore this enchanting area on your own.
  • The ship anchors mid-river for the evening, providing a marvellous opportunity to observe the stars, followed by a spectacular dinner.

Day 3 : Bagan (B, L, D)

  • Relax on-board with a morning at leisure, including a cooking demonstration on the top deck.
  • The ship moors in Mandalay late afternoon for a tour of Mingun, home to the enormous, ruined pagoda of King Bodawpaya. Return to the ship for dinner and local entertainment.

  • A full day's excursion to Maymyo, a colonial hill station set high in the mountains. A typical Shan lunch is taken at a colonial house.

  • After breakfast, visit Sagaing Hills, regarded as the centre of Buddhist faith in Myanmar. Return to Road To Mandalay for lunch as you cruise to Mandalay.

  • Join an early morning walking tour of Shwe Kyet Yet village. Return for breakfast as the ship sails to the ancient capital of Ava, where you'll disembark for a tour by horse-drawn cart.
