Itinerary

Day 1 : Mandalay Arrival & Embarkation (D)
  • Board Belmond Orcaella and cruise on the Ayeyarwady River towards northern Myanmar. A stop at Mingun includes a visit to the world's largest brick-built pagoda and the biggest uncracked bell.
  • This evening you’ll get to know fellow travellers at the welcome cocktail and dinner party.
Day 2 : Mandalay – New Nyein (B, L, D)
  • Disembark at Nwe Nyein for a guided walking tour and a chance to meet artisans sculpting traditional clay pots. Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar. Lecture “Myanmar ways of life” by your guide at the Lounge Bar.
  • Dinner is served in the Restaurant. Take a release of Shan Balloons at the Observation Deck if weather permitting.
Day 3 : Kyan Hnyat (B, L, D)
  • Spend the morning strolling around the delightful village of Kyan Hnyat. Children greet you on their way to school and the market begins bustle with activity.
  • As RV Orcaella continues its voyage, you can admire the rural villages dotted along the shore.
Day 4 : Katha (B, L, D)
  • Visit Katha by trishaw and take in the market made famous by George Orwell in Burmese Days. Return on board and set sail. Lunch buffet is served in the Restaurant.
  • Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar where you can also enjoy a lecture. This evening dinner is served in the Restaurant followed by entertainment from Shan Dancers on the Observation Deck.
Day 5 : Bhamo (B, L, D)
  • Arrive at Shwe Paw Kyun. Transfer by boat to the pretty Shwe Paw Island and walk among the stilt houses of the Kachin fishermen. Visit the island monastery, and perhaps call into the village school. Return on board and set sail for Bhamo. We will be entering the dramatic, narrow 2nd defile around 10:00 and passing through should take about two hours. Enjoy the scenery from the Observation Deck. Buffet lunch is served in the Restaurant.
  • Transfer to shore by fast boat for a walking tour of the lively town of Bhamo, the major northern trading post between China and Myanmar.
Day 6 : Weima (B, L, D)
  • Arrive at Weima village and enjoy a visit to an elephant camp. Continue with a visit to the local school to donate school stationary.
  • Return on board. Spend the afternoon on board and enjoy afternoon tea in the Lounge.
Day 7 : Kachin (B, L, D)
  • In the early morning, board a train to the forest station of Naba and journey into the thick Kachin jungle and teak forest. Myanmar traditional dress “longyi” and thanakha (local make up) demonstrated on the Observation Deck.
  • Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar. Join fellow travellers for a longyi cocktail party.
Day 8 : Ma Lae (B, L, D)
  • Alight at Ma Lae Village for a walking tour of the village and a visit to the monastery. Witness a traditional Noviciation Ceremony, regarded as a very important moment for young Burmese boys. After dinner enthusiastic young actors from Mandalay’s School of Performing Arts will enact scenes from the Yamayana play on the Observation Deck. This is a Hindu Creation Epic that is widely performed across all of South-East Asia and features characters from Bali, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Day 9 : Mandalay (B, L, D)
  • Mandalay comes into view in the early morning. Disembark for a tour of Myanmar’s second city, including lunch at a local restaurant. A special dinner will be served on the sandbank this evening.
Day 10 : Bagan (B, L, D)
  • Spend the day gazing at the passing scenery as the ship continues towards Bagan. This evening take in the unforgettable sunset over the Bagan plain and enjoy a puppet show by traditional Bagan artists.
Day 11 : Bagan (B, L, D)
  • Visit the ancient sites in and around Bagan with an expert guide. In the afternoon you may choose to join a tour of Mount Popa—the legendary home of animist spirits known as Nats—with its impressive summit monastery. Or take a horse-drawn cart or a bicycle to explore on your own.
  • Celebrate your final evening on board at this evening’s cocktail party, and say goodbye to your new friends during the Farewell Dinner.
Day 12 : Bagan Disembarkation (B)
  • Transfer to Bagan airport for your flight to Yangon.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Mandalay Arrival &Embarkation (D)
  • Arrive in Mandalay and enjoy a sightseeing transfer to the ship. You’ll see the revered Mahamuni Temple, Kyaukisittan and Shwe Kyaung before arriving.
  • Once on board a buffet lunch will be served as we sail past the golden temples of Sagaing, followed by a welcome briefing and afternoon tea in the Lounge Bar. Join us in the Restaurant for a welcome cocktail before dinner.
Day 2 : Mandalay - Monywa (B, L, D)
  • This morning enjoy an introductory lecture about the Myanmar way of life as we cruise towards Monywa. Later visit the colorful Thanboddhay Pagoda at Monywa. Complete the tour with a photo opportunity at the magnificent 424ft standing Buddha at Bodhi Tataung.
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner served on board.
Day 3 : Monywa - Moktaw (B, L, D)
  • After breakfast alight for a walking tour of the traditional farming village of Moktaw. Witness an important rite of passage in Myanmar, the novice initiation ceremony, at the Moktaw monastery.
  • Spend a leisurely afternoon on board before a longyi cocktail party and after dinner entertainment.
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner served on board.
Day 4 : Moktaw (B, L, D)
  • Disembark for an early morning visit to the ‘Teak Port’ of Maukkadaw before returning to the ship for brunch. This afternoon take afternoon tea in the Lounge while Dr. Khin Maung Nyunt treats you to a local history lecture.
  • Dinner is followed by Toh dances on the Sundeck.
Day 5 : Moktaw – Kalay - Mawleik (B, L, D)
  • After breakfast take an excursion to Kalay for a glimpse of local life at the lively market. Relax and enjoy the ship’s luxurious facilities this afternoon as we cruise towards Mawleik.
  • Dinner this evening is a barbecue on shore at Mawleik, with transfers by local tuk tuk.
Day 6 : Mawleik - Sitthaung (B, L, D)
  • This morning visit Mawleik town, once the administrative seat of the Bombay Burma Trading Company. Take a local truck transfer to Mawleik elephant camp followed by a historical tour of the town.
  • Enjoy lunch and afternoon tea on board. This afternoon your guide will present a lecture on the current situation in Myanmar.
  • Dinner is followed by the release of Shan balloons. RV Orcaella docks tonight at Sitthaung.
Day 7 : Sitthaung – Naung San Kyin (B, L, D)
  • Disembark for a morning trek to the rural village of Sitthaung. See the emerald green paddy fields on your way to the village pagoda.
  • After lunch on board the ship enjoy the views as we sail towards Naung San Kyin, or participate in the discussion of Myanmar religions, culture and traditions in the Lounge.
Day 8 : Naung San Kyin – Nan Maw Leik (B, L, D)
  • Today’s excursion takes us to Homalin town. Enjoy a riverside walk, the morning market and the Buddha Lotus Garden with its exquisite temple and stunning views.
  • Spend the afternoon at leisure as we sail to Nan Maw Leik.
Day 9 : Nan Maw Leik - Kyidaung (B, L, D)
  • Enjoy a leisurely breakfast as we sail through beautiful scenery towards Kyidaung.
  • This morning watch RV Orcaella’s Executive Chef deliver a cooking demonstration on the sundeck.
  • In the afternoon join a walking tour to the quaint village of Kyidaung and visit the Oo monastery.
Day 10 : Kyidaung – Mingin - Kani (B, L, D)
  • Take a morning tour of Mingin, an important town during the reign of King Mindon, including a visit to the impressive Mahar Minkyaung Monastery.
  • Return to the ship and continue towards Kani for an afternoon tour. Visit the site of the Nat Shrine and experience a real 'Nat Pwe' paying homage to the Nat of Kani.
Day 11 : Kani - Bagan (B, L, D)
  • Enjoy a mid-morning brunch before disembarking for a visit to the exceptional and historically important sites of Bagan, accompanied by our guides.
  • Return to the ship for dinner.
Day 12 : Bagan (B, L, D)
  • After breakfast transfer to shore to experience the morning market of Nyaung Oo followed by a tour of Bagan’s major temples. Lunch is taken on shore in a Bagan restaurant.
  • This afternoon there is a choice of activities. Travel to sacred Mount Popa, stopping off at a Toddy Palm plantation on the way, or take a private horse and cart or bicycle tour within the city of Bagan. Enjoy the evening’s farewell cocktail party and entertainment before your final dinner on board.
Day 13 : Bagan Disembarkation (B)
  • Disembark early morning for your return flight to Yangon and onward travel.

  • Later, disembark for a guided tour of the ancient city and witness the unforgettable sunset over the Bagan plain.
Day 2 : Bagan – Salay (B, L, D)
  • Start the day with a shopping tour in Bagan and a visit to the gilded Shwezigon Pagoda. You may also wish to arrange a tour of Old Bagan by horse cart or bicycle.
  • In the afternoon, set sail towards Salay where you can visit the Wooden Monastery and an impressive 20ft Buddha made of straw lacquer.
Day 3 : Magwe (B, L, D)
  • Visit the port town of Magwe and its famous Myathalon Pagoda; devotees come from miles around to join in religious festivals.
  • Continue to Min Hla and for a late afternoon visit to the local fort, the site of a great battle during the second Anglo-Burmese War.
Day 4 : Sri Ksetra (B, L, D)
  • Longyi tying and Thanakha wearing demonstrated on the Observation Deck.
  • Take an afternoon visit by bus to the ancient city Sri Ksetra (‘Fabulous City’) with its unique cylindrical shaped stone stupas. Dating back to the 5th – 9th century, this city flourished during the rule of the Phyu. During the 1890’s Pyay was a booming trade town, and there is still much activity in and around the docks.
  • Next, enjoy a city tour, visit the impressive Shwe-san-daw Pagoda and the imposing 10-storey Sitting Buddha watching over this important site.
Day 5 : Shwe Taung - Pyay (B, L, D)
  • Set out by bus on a morning excursion to Shwe Taung town and visit Shwe Myat Mhan Pagoda to see the only ‘bespectacled’ Buddha in Myanmar (thought to have curing powers).
  • One the way back, discover local industry with a visit to a local sweets confectioner and a bamboo shoot pickle maker. Return to RV Orcaella and depart from Pyay.
  • Spend the afternoon relaxing on board and taking in the scenery.
Day 6 : Pyay (B, L, D)
  • Disembark at the small port of Zalon. Take a tuk tuk along the main street, lined with stunning colonial-style wooden houses and large tropical gardens. Arrive at the Pyi Taw Pyan Pagoda.
  • Continue to another little-visited town called Danuphyu. This is where the revered General Maha Bandula led a Burmese defensive against the British troops during the Anglo-Burmese War.
Day 7 : Yangon (B, L, D)
  • Spend the morning relaxing on the deck as you make your way to Yangon.  Join an optional excursion; choose between shopping in Yangon or a heritage tour.
Day 8 : Yangon Disembarkation (B)
  • Disembark in the late morning for your onward travel arrangements.

  • Board Belmond Orcaella at its mooring in Yangon and enjoy a relaxing breakfast as we start our journey to Bagan.
  • After lunch, enjoy an introductory lecture about the heritage buildings we are sailing past along the Ayeyarwady River. A welcome cocktail party and introduction to the ship’s officers precedes dinner from Executive Chef and team.
Day 2 : Bagan - Danuphyu (B, L, D)
  • This morning visit Danuphyu, a historically important town during the Anglo-Burmese War. See General Maha Bandula memorial at Pali University, followed by a trip to a cheroot maker and local tea shops
  • Afternoon tea is accompanied by a lecture on poets and writers in Myanmar. Traditional Myanmar folk dancing is your after-dinner entertainment tonight.
Day 3 : Pyay (B, L, D)
  • Spend the day relaxing on board as we make our way towards the ancient Myanmar capital of Pyay. Take in the sights and sounds of the river, or make use of the luxurious ship facilities.
  • On board entertainment today includes cookery, astrology and a ‘longyi’ (traditional dress) tying demonstration. Wear your longyi at this evening’s pre-dinner cocktail party.
Day 4 : Pyay (B, L, D)
  • Arrive in Pyay in the morning and disembark for a visit to the impressive Shwesadaw Pagoda and ten storey Buddha in Sri Ksetra.
  • Return to RV Orcaella and spend the rest of the afternoon sailing through the stunning scenery.
Day 5 : Gwechaung (B, L, D)
  • After a full morning sailing, enjoy an afternoon stop to explore the quaint Gwechaung village by ox-cart for first-hand experience of the rural lifestyle along the Ayeyarwady River.
